Belgium - Visual impairment: live the experience to understand it

Being visually impaired still remains difficult to imagine or fully understand. Therefore, the “BrailleLiga – Ligue Braille” launched an awareness campaign allowing the general public to get a grasp of what it means to be visually impaired.

Several campaign actions simulated the sight of a person with diabetic retinopathy. This disease in particular causes including blurry, black or bright spots to interrupt the person's vision. A filter simulating this eye condition was applied to the windows of certain bus shelters in Brussels and other major Belgian cities, as well as to the cover wrap of the popular daily newspaper Metro. Posters hanging in Brussels' public transportation stations, a television spot and virtual reality videos brought the campaign message to life: Visual impairment, live the experience to understand it.

Furthermore, the elderly were playfully informed about all kinds of eye diseases through informative activities in several nursing homes. The icing on the cake was that all residents got served a meal for healthy eyes.

In order to be able to live their lives as independently as possible, a new practical guide for the visually impaired informs and encourages them to cope with their handicap.
