Luetus® Service: Making Reading Accessible in Finland

Luetus® service, specifically designed for the visually impaired, offers a wide range of accessible reading materials. In Finland, visually impaired users can enjoy dozens of newspapers, magazines, thousands of books, weekly listings of radio and TV programs, and various guides and catalogs. All content is adapted to be accessible.

The users can access their preferred publications on mobile devices, computers, and Daisy Online-compliant players such as the Webbox and VictorReader Stream. The user-friendly Luetus reading app uses synthesized speech to read aloud text from publications. The Luetus® app is available for Android and iOS devices, Windows and even Linux computers, and the talking Blindshell phone with a physical keypad. For those who prefer visual reading, text is also displayed on the device screen, with adjustable speech speed and text size to suit individual preferences. Moveover, braille readers can read newspapers and other content on their braille display.

The Finnish Federation of the Visually Impaired provides the Luetus® service nationwide in long-term collaboration with the publishers and Celia - The national library for accessible literature and publishing. The service has transformed over three decades to serve its users better, and some of the team members have seen this evolutionary journey from the very beginning.

Through a cross-platform software framework, new features are seamlessly rolled out for Android and iOS, ensuring continuous enhancements. With around 2,400 users, the Luetus® service continues to grow, as more people opt for online channels over traditional mail for their reading needs. The service has primarily been funded by public grants for social welfare and health.
