The Museum of the Visually Impaired is a special museum of the history of persons with disabilities. The museum was founded in 1990 and is maintained by Finnish Federation of the Visually Impaired.
The museum takes care of the storage, research and display of the history and cultural heritage of the community of the blind and partially sighted people. The museum's collections include objects, photographs, documents, audio, speech and video recordings as well as member magazines and books. The collections shed light on the history and development of education of the blind, the traditional professions, access to information and everyday aids as well as the work of organizations of blind and partially sighted from the middle of the 19th century to the present day.
In 2019, the tactile basic exhibition "Centuries of Visually Impaired Work" was renewed and it features, among other things, tactile maps, braille books, braille embossers and boards, miniature models and traditional brush and basket tools. Visitors can also try braille writing with old writing instruments and work methods and test simulation glasses. The purpose of the simulation glasses is to highlight the different degrees of visual impairment. In addition, in the museum you can listen to talk shows about visual impairment from different decades.
The basic philosophy of the museum is the slogan of the international disability movement: "Nothing about us without us
