In March 2025, Glasgow Science Centre will once again become the epicentre of a global conversation on accessibility and innovation. The return of RNIB Scotland’s Inclusive Design for Sustainability (IDS) Conference after 2023's successful event is a pivotal moment - not just for those who are blind or partially sighted but for everyone striving to build a more inclusive world.
Technology, when designed inclusively, can unlock boundless possibilities for individuals and communities. From autonomous robotics to AI-powered solutions, the tools of tomorrow hold immense potential to transform how we navigate, work, learn, and connect. But for that potential to be fully realized, inclusivity must be at the forefront - not an afterthought.
The theme of this year’s conference, accessible technology, is timely and essential. Advances in artificial intelligence, robotics, and sustainable design are accelerating at a breathtaking pace. But as we build the future, we must ask: who are we building it for? The answer must be everyone.

At RNIB Scotland, we believe inclusive design is more than a set of principles - it’s a call to action. It’s about ensuring that blind and partially sighted people have equal access to the tools they need to lead the lives they want. It’s about empowering individuals through innovation while reducing inequalities worldwide. The IDS Conference brings together the brightest minds, boldest innovators, and most passionate advocates to explore how we can achieve this vision.
This year’s lineup features global technology leaders like Google, Microsoft, and Starship, alongside pioneers in accessibility and sustainability. We’re honoured to welcome Dr. Aubrey Webson, UN Ambassador and champion of disability rights, as our keynote speaker. His presence underscores the conference’s global significance and its potential to influence policy, innovation, and public attitudes on accessibility.
Sessions like Shaping the Future: AI and Shaping the Future: Robotics highlight how cutting-edge technologies can reshape mobility, independence, and leisure for blind and partially sighted individuals. Panels on inclusive mobility and accessible environments delve into how infrastructure can be reimagined to create equitable journeys - whether on foot, by train, or even in autonomous vehicles.
One of the most exciting aspects of this year’s conference is its focus on global collaboration. With 80% of people living in the Global South, technological innovation must be inclusive not only in design but in delivery. Discussions led by Sightsavers and the World Blind Union will explore how international partnerships can drive meaningful change for millions worldwide.
But the conference is not just about technology - it’s about people. It’s about ensuring that no one is left behind in a world that increasingly relies on digital solutions. By bringing together voices from diverse sectors and regions, we’re fostering a dialogue that goes beyond buzzwords to drive actionable change.
At its core, the Inclusive Design and Sustainability Conference is a celebration of what’s possible when we put accessibility at the heart of innovation. It’s a reminder that inclusive design benefits everyone - not just those with sight loss. Features like voice assistants, captioning, and tactile interfaces were developed with accessibility in mind, yet they’ve often become indispensable tools for the wider public.
As we prepare to gather in Glasgow this March, our message is clear: inclusion is not a luxury - it’s a necessity. The convergence of sustainability, innovation, and accessibility presents a once in a generation opportunity to reshape our world for the better. Events like the IDS Conference are where that journey begins.
Together, we can push the boundaries of what’s possible and ensure that the future is accessible to all. I hope you’ll join us in this vital conversation.
